Date of original image or object1861-1865?
Description of contentAmputation and trephine field set (two trays) in a wooden container lined with red cloth. Corners are trimmed with brass. Container lid has a small brass plate attached to it that is not engraved. The case contains 10 instruments, marked Snowden, Phila., used by Dr. John Patton Mitchell during the Civil War. The instruments have textured handles, possibly wood or hard rubber.
NotesCase is in poor condition; right upper corner of the case bottom has a piece missing. Key is possibly missing from lock (Expert Dr. Michael Echols indicates military sets did not have keys). Case has four empty slots for instruments. This set was owned by Dr. John Patton Mitchell (1834-1906), who served as a captain in the Confederate army. He received his medical degree in 1858 from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and moved to Clarksville, Arkansas in 1859 where he practiced until 1899. His son, John Willis, also practiced medicine and operated Mitchell Drug Store in Clarksville until his death in 1909.
